Pirates, AW 1981-82, first catwalk show:"Plundering history and the Third World". An example of research into historical dress, keeping the original cuts as fashion. Pirate trousers had a baggy bum in contrast with other fashions at the time. At this important point in her career, Vivienne developed ethnic cutting techniques which are based on rectangles.
She has an idea she knows will work, knocks it up in rough and in small scale and tries it out on a little dummy. Through various adjustments and fittings she arrives at a full scale finished garment in the right fabric. Clothes always have a dynamic with the body.
She continues to mix this in with historical cuts. Pirate was shown at Olympia in spring 1981, to a blast of cannon fire and rap music by McLaren. The clothes evoked the golden age of piracy, an age of highwaymen, dandies and buccaneers. As in Punk, the garments were unisex. The collection immediately entered the mainstream.
An entire pirate outfit is held by the Victoria and Albert Museum and is often displayed as a example of British fashion artistry. Approximate measurements (for guidance only) as follows. Hem to hem (knee) - 25cm. Alternatively can arrange for collection at central London location.
Please note that this is a collectors piece and due to its age does have signs of wear and tear. In particular, the strap at the back has been replaced and is therefore made from a different fabric. The story goes that these trousers were worn at the legendary'Billy's Club' in 1980's London where someone grabbed the strap at the back, ripping it from the trousers. Hence resulting in the necessary repair work.
